Cosmetic Surgery by the Numbers

The Cosmetic Surgery National Data Bank published surgical statistics in 2012 and many of the numbers are quite interesting. The most common surgical procedure done this past year was breast augmentation followed by liposuction, tummy tuck, eyelid surgery, and rhinoplasty. At a sixteen year comparison, breast augmentation increased from 100,000 patients in that year to over 300,000 this past year. As far as the non-surgical procedures, Botulinum Toxin Type A (Botox and Dysport) was used almost twice as frequently as fillers such as Perlane, Juvederm and Belotero. Including both surgical and non-surgical procedures, men made up approximately 10% of the patients. With breast augmentation being the number one rated operative procedure; women ages 19 – 34 made up 50% of the patients seeking augmentation. For all procedures, ages 35-50 represented 43% of all operative patients.

Every patient who undergoes a cosmetic surgical procedure rates the results of that procedure independently. If you look at the National picture, the top two operative procedures that had the highest rating by patients were abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) 95% and breast augmentation at 93%. That equates to greater than nine out of ten patients for those two procedures stating they would do it again. None of the procedures both surgical and non-surgical rated lower than 59% again, stating they would do it again. The lowest rating happened to be a skin care procedure, microdermabrasion.

I think you will find all members of The Plastic Surgery Group, due to their extensive training in anatomy of the face and body are uniquely qualified to perform both surgical and non-invasive procedures. All members of The Plastic Surgery Group are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery is responsible for accumulating the data through the Cosmetic Surgery National Data Bank and we thank them for that service.
