Augmentation Mammoplasty

Breast augmentation is a common procedure to enhance or augment the size and shape of a woman’s breasts. Women with small or underdeveloped breasts are good candidates for this type of procedure. After pregnancy, women often report a loss in breast volume and may elect to undergo a breast augmentation procedure to restore volume. Some women turn to breast augmentation to correct physical malformations, such as, tubular breasts. An added benefit for women that have been self-conscious about their small breasts is improved self-esteem.

The Procedure:

A breast implant is used for most breast augmentation procedures. This implant may be filled with silicone gel or a salt-water solution known as saline. Typically, a small incision is made in the crease where the breast meets the chest. The implant is placed through this small incision and centered beneath the nipple. Stitches are used to close the incision. Recovery is relatively quick and most women find they are able to resume a regular work or home schedule in a few days.
